About De Hallen

A monument full of stories
In the middle of Oud-West, behind the Kinkerstraat and next to the Ten Kate Market, you will find De Hallen: a vibrant center for culture, hospitality, craftsmanship and encounters. Once a tram depot from 1905 — now a place where Amsterdammers and visitors come together to enjoy, create and discover.

Food & Drink
From street food in the Foodhallen to cocktails at the Kanarie Club, a book of coffee in the Belcampo living room café or a stylish dinner at Hotel De Hallen: this is where you can taste Amsterdam at its best.

Arts & Culture
Creativity is in the walls. Watch movies in the Filmhallen, admire contemporary art at the Beeldend Gesproken gallery, visit the OBA or be surprised by a changing exhibition on location.
In Hal West — De Hallen Studio's cultural venue — it's all about encounter, imagination and exchange. From spoken word to lectures and performances: this is where stories come together.

The Passage
The covered Passage connects Tollensstraat with the Ten Kate Market and forms the beating heart of De Hallen. Accessible seven days a week, this wide, bright space is brimming with life. It's home to markets, pop-up activities and cultural events, and the high ceiling regularly features exhibitions on big banners — from neighborhood portraits to fashion illustration or socially engaged art.

Craft & training
In Denim City, makers, students and international brands are working on a sustainable denim future. Follow workshops such as “Make your own jeans” or “Customize your denim”. At Recycle, people with a distance from the labor market learn the bicycle mechanic's profession. The Jean School and the Kinki Hairdressing Academy are also active here — and yes, you can also just pop in for a fresh haircut at Kinki Academy.

Workshops & creativity
In De Hallen, you learn by doing. From soap making at Nature Bar to vision board workshops to sewing your own kimono at House of Denim. Dance and yoga classes also take place weekly, in the Belcampo Loft. This is where the head, heart and body move.

Shopping & markets
Shop locally at boutiques like The Maker Store, NoWa & Nature Bar, and The Gathershop. In De Passage, you'll find changing markets full of design, vintage and goodies almost every weekend.

Social impact
De Hallen is also a place for connection. Think of exchange festivals, sustainability events, dialogues about connection, language exchanges, Alzheimer Café, vintage markets and creative writing evenings. Together with local residents and partners, we are building a social, resilient Oud-West.

For families
De Hallen is also a great place for children. There is a branch of childcare organization Blos, a cozy play corner in Café Belcampo and a puppet show in the Passage every Wednesday. Reading hours are regularly organized in the OBA, and there are creative workshops and fun children's activities throughout the year. A cultural place where you make memories together.

Events & media
The Hallen Studios have various spaces for conferences, dinners and productions. Well-known programs such as Jinek and Classical Podium are included here.

Architecture
Built between 1901 and 1928 in Amsterdam School style, De Hallen breathe history. The old tram tracks are still there, just like the original number plates. The glass gable roofs let in plenty of daylight. What was once a closed workshop is now an open space for everyone.
De Hallen is a national monument.
