Diaspora Sounds
Diaspora Sounds is a panel discussion about the history, roots, culture, and impact of house music.
During this first edition, the genre will be explored from various perspectives as we discuss the Black and queer origins of house and how it has evolved into a global phenomenon.
The guests for this edition are researcher and archivist Saffa Khalil, DJ Malindi Janssen, gospel house artist Calis Nyarko, and moderator Noëlle van Russel. Drawing on their own knowledge and experience, they will contribute to the conversation, covering everything from the history and cultural context of house to the contemporary house scene.
In addition to the panel, there will be time for music. Calis Nyarko will provide a musical performance, showcasing his work as a gospel house artist. DJ Malindi Janssen will close the evening with a house set, bringing her own interpretation of the genre to the dance floor. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, share experiences, and engage with one another. In this way, Diaspora Sounds brings conversation, music, and community together in a single evening, creating space for connection and a deeper appreciation for the stories behind house music.
