Talks & Community

From the Pride marches of 1980s New York to Roze Zaterdag and Amsterdam Pride of today - photographer Chantal Regnault, and writer, and editor of NRC Magazine, Menno Sedee explore the importance of preserving queer histories and the role of visibility in inspiring community and the role photography plays in celebrating, documenting, and protecting queer cultures.

At a time when LGBTQIA+ rights are increasingly under pressure and queer visibility remains contested, photography remains a powerful tool for affirmation, visibility, and resistance.

19:30 - 20:00 - Walk-in

20:00 - 20:30 - Introduction by Samira Damato en Zindzi Zwietering

20:30 - 21:00 - Menno Sedee in dialogue with Chantal Regnault

Chantal Regnault and Menno Sedee will discuss the history of the Pride movement from New York to Amsterdam, reflecting on Regnault’s photography documenting the iconic Pride marches in 1980s New York, alongside Sedee’s research into the history of Amsterdam Pride. The conversation will explore the importance of queer visibility, the visual language of Pride and queer culture, the relationship between documentation and activism, and how censorship and public attitudes toward LGBTQIA+ communities have evolved over time. Together, they will examine the role of photography, journalism, and cultural memory in preserving queer histories and shaping contemporary Pride movements.
