Amsterdam Tram Expo — paintings by Jim Gijbels

An ode to the Amsterdam tram in oil paint. This summer, De Hallen Amsterdam is proud to present the Amsterdam Tram Expo — an exhibition featuring paintings by artist Jim Gijbels, which translates his lifelong fascination with trams and trains into colorful oil paintings. His work can be seen in De Galerie from Wednesday, July 30 to Saturday, August 23, 2025.

Gijbels grew up with a love for everything that has wheels. At an early age, he drew trains and trams endlessly, inspired by tram 17 rides and a wind-up train from his childhood. What started as a childhood hobby grew into an artistic calling. His style is vibrant, rich in color and nostalgia — a tribute to the moving city that is Amsterdam.

De Hallen is the perfect setting for this exhibition: from 1905 to 1996, the monumental complex served as a tram depot for the Amsterdam Electric Tram. In exactly that historical context, Gijbels' work comes to life, with canvases that reflect the cityscape of the past and present.

The exhibition shows a selection of his tram paintings — detailed, warm and recognisable. The work is for sale, but mainly intended to be shared: with Amsterdammers, art lovers, public transport nerds and anyone who likes the city's charm.

Expo opening hours:

Wednesday to Saturday | 12:00 — 18:00

Closed Sunday to Tuesday

Location: De Galerie, Hannie Dankbaarpassage 25, De Hallen Amsterdam
