Turning loneliness into a conversation through art, music and human connection.

New exhibition 'Connections: a postcard in exchange for your name' by Tomás Mauro in De Hallen Amsterdam.

From September 18 to October 8, artist and composer Tomás Mauro will present the multidisciplinary exhibition Connections: a postcard in exchange for your name in De Hallen. The exhibition combines piano music, photography, short stories and animation into an intimate experience about human connection and loneliness. The exhibition takes place in the run-up to and during the national Week Against Loneliness (September 26 to October 2), and thus ties in with the wider conversation about connection and social engagement.

In our fast-paced, individualistic society, loneliness is a subject that is difficult to talk about. In the gallery, Mauro creates a place for encounter, recognition and exchange - over a cup of coffee. Visitors are invited to share their own experiences of loneliness anonymously on a map and leave them on a specially designed wall.

Daily concerts

The exhibition is open daily from 12:00 to 21:00, except Monday. Twice a day, Tomás Mauro gives a live piano concert: from 13:00 to 14:00 and from 19:30 to 20:30. Admission is free.

About the creator

Tomás Mauro van Emden (2000) recently completed his studies in Medicine at the Free University of Amsterdam. During his studies, he studied Planetary Health, which focuses on social inequality, mental health and nature protection. In the free periods around his internships, he traveled to nature reserves in Chile, Norway and Scotland, among others. There, he experienced both intense connection with people and nature and the loss of these connections. He incorporated these experiences into classical music compositions, short stories, photography and an animation (in collaboration with animator Pepijn Jong).

“It was precisely the memories of meetings and places that gave me comfort in moments of loneliness,” says Mauro. “With this art, I want to invite others to share their own experiences and dreams — and thus make new connections together.”

This exhibition was made possible in part thanks to a contribution from the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK).
