International photography exhibition on ageing takes on an Amsterdam flavour at De Hallen

May 1 to July 1, 2026 | De Passage, De Hallen Amsterdam The world is aging rapidly: by 2030, one in six people will be over sixty. With the exhibition Still Becoming, from 1 May to 1 July 2026 in De Hallen, this global development gets a local Amsterdam touch.

In Still Becoming, a project produced by Ilvy Njiokiktjien, Ed Kashi and Julie Winokur, photographers from around the world show the impact of an aging world in the international project 1in6by2030. The exhibition consists of 18 compelling portraits that show how people around the world are aging and how this affects their daily life, identity and role in society.

In addition, Amsterdammers were also photographed especially for the presentation in De Hallen. Their stories place the global figures in a local context and show how this demographic shift is also happening in the city.

The images are presented in large format on banners in the Passage van De Hallen, with additional context on information panels. Together, they paint a layered picture of aging: as a social challenge, but also as a phase full of resilience, development and meaning.

With Still Becoming, De Hallen brings a current and urgent theme to the heart of Amsterdam-West. The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on how we live together in an aging society - and what that requires of us all.

The exhibition can be visited daily and free of charge in De Passage of De Hallen.
